As much as we love our pets, it’s no secret that owning a dog can lead to a messy house. From accidents to shedding to scratching the floors, some things are just inevitable. Many people will shrug it off since they love their pets so much. But having a clean home and a dog are not mutually exclusive.

Check out some tips and tricks below on how to keep your home clean:

1. Get an Automatic Vacuum

Carpets are perhaps the biggest challenge to keep the fur off when your dog sheds. As you walk on it, the fur will get buried in the carpeting, which makes it more difficult to get out. If this has happened to you, Martha Stewart recommends going over the same spot by moving the vacuum in different directions than using a rubber rake to scrape out the rest of the fur.

It can be a challenge to stay on top of vacuuming. Try purchasing an automatic vacuum to help yourself stay on top of this chore. Not to mention, most automatic vacuums are small enough to go under furniture and other hard to reach places that you might miss.

2. Groom Regularly

Some of the best ways to keep your home clean is to stop a mess from ever happening. Create a regular grooming schedule for your dog. This will cut down on fur, pet dander and keep them smelling fresh.

Pet dander can be a huge hazard in the home, not only can it create smelly odors, but also can make those with asthma and allergies uncomfortable. An air purifier is a great way to control pet dander in your home. Make sure to do your research, as some filters are more suited for pets than others. Compare different models to find one that fits your budget and needs.

3. Tackle Stains Quickly

Accidents happen, especially if you’re dealing with a puppy. To keep stains from setting in the best thing you can do is treat the moment you see them. A simple mix of dish soap and water is usually enough to take out a fresh stain. Try and gently blot the area to keep from rubbing the stain in. If you’re able to remove any visible stain but an odor remains, House Beautiful recommends applying a light spritz of vodka or baking soda to neutralize the area.

4. Invest in the Right Furniture

A dog can expedite the wear and tear of your home, which is why if you have the budget you should consider in getting quality furniture. This means not only getting quality and durable furniture, but also taking into consideration the fabrics and colors you choose. For example, leather/pleather is great for big shedders and darker colors are great for hiding stains.

If you don’t have the space or budget for some new furniture, try getting some cheap throw blankets instead. Not only can this add a little extra style to your home, but also will act as cover for your pup’s favorite spots. This way you can protect your furniture without having to toss on some uncomfortable plastic.

5. Wipe Their Paws

Dogs will track the outdoors inside with them without meaning to. It can be near impossible to teach them to wipe their paws effectively but that doesn’t that a doormat is useless. It will help with some of the dirt, but you can take an extra step by wiping their paws clean with a rag and water right when they return. Stopping dirt at the door is a great way to keep your home clean.

Deep Breath

It can feel like a lot of work to keep your home clean with a dog. While this may be so, don’t let it pile up. Prevent messes as much as you can by thinking ahead. Both you and your pooch will enjoy a clean environment.
