The team at PACT is heartbroken to learn of the horrific death of Al Chernoff, a dedicated volunteer at PACT and a dear friend of mine. His love for all animals, but specifically his cat “kids”, numbering 11, was always a conversation Al was eager to share. He was a true hero to everyone who knew him. His behind the scene work on behalf of animal welfare organizations was amazing.
Al, an Army veteran, was proud of his service to our country. He became a soldier in PACT’s Civilian Army of Volunteers in our triage mission to keep companion pets in loving foster care until reunited with their families, at no charge. Al was instrumental, 24/7, in saving the lives of companion pets in need of a helping hand who had to be transported by air from cities around the country.
PACT could count on Al to retrieve dogs and cats that were flown to Philadelphia International Airport. Our triage work in support of our brave men and women reporting on active duty who needed long term temporary foster care for their pets, was a priority for Al always. Working at the Airport allowed him to be there for every beloved pet that was shipped to Philly and placed with a PACT volunteer until reunited with that soldier.
Al went beyond the call of duty always in his dedication to animal welfare organizations. I don’t think NO was ever a part of his vocabulary when it came to his love for animals. Al was the definition of “unconditional love” to all who knew him. Rest in peace, Al. You were an American hero who will be sorely missed. Love you man.
