Both James and his spouse are members of the US Navy, and will both be going on overseas assignments this summer. The couple doesn’t have local friends or family without other pets to care for their dog, Hrothgar, during the time that they will both be away, from 8/1/2021 – 1/7/2021. Hrothgar needs a foster within 2 states of Fairfax, VA. Can you offer this smart, sweet guy a place to stay?
Hrothgar is a 7 year old, 60lbs, neutered male German Shepherd. Hrothgar is up to date on his vaccinations, flea/tick prevention, heartworm prevention, and he has been microchipped. Hrothgar is allergic to chicken/poultry, and takes season allergy medicine in Fall/Winter, as well as a daily joint supplement. Hrothgar was sadly attacked by a much larger dog when he was just a puppy, and has retained fear from that experience. However, James has really worked hard with him to make sure that he is easy to walk with, and he will not lunge at other dogs in view, but may show signs of distress if there are unleashed dogs, lunging or barking dogs in his area. Fosters should still be prepared to walk defensively with Hrothgar, but know that he can be redirected with a “focus” command. Hrothgar is crate and leash trained, and knows commands for sit, stay, wait, down, chase, okay (release command), up/jump, focus, lookout (puts paws up on a fence or wall to look at something.) James says, “He is a huge cuddle bug and wants to spend time with humans all the time, and loves being praised and petted. He also has a love of getting an ice cube any time his humans go to get ice (we call this his ‘ice tax’). He’s VERY well behaved in the house, but will stare longingly at you if you are eating something he would love to have (like bacon, or carrots). Hrothgar does not chase dogs, but is reactive especially to other dogs that are off-leash, or poorly-trained; he is fearful of other dogs charging at him from when he was attacked as a puppy. Do NOT take him to dog parks, or invite other dogs to play with him; he wants to be left alone from dogs. He is a people-dog. With six years of positive training, he is one of the best behaved dogs in the city and ignores most dogs while walking as long as they don’t get into his personal space and aren’t lunging at him or barking at him. In the event that happens, just command him to ‘run’ with you out of the situation, or walk off trail and command him to ‘focus’ on you while the other dog passes.”
